The Difference Between Invisalign and Fixed Braces

Straightening your teeth is a big decision, and choosing between fixed braces and Invisalign® can feel confusing. Both can produce great results, but have pros and cons to be aware of in terms of effectiveness, aesthetics and overall experience. This article explains how fixed braces and Invisalign work, their pros and cons, and how to start deciding which approach might suit you best.

What are Fixed Braces?

Fixed braces are the traditional orthodontic treatment, and are what you will usually be offered on the NHS.

They consist of brackets, often made of stainless steel (the ‘train track’ design), fitted to the front of the teeth with wires. Some orthodontists also offer lingual braces which are fitted to the back of the teeth and are not visible in front.

According to the NHS, treatment usually lasts between 6 and 30 months depending on how complicated the situation is.

Some patients may also require elastics to guide the teeth in a particular direction.

Why choose fixed braces?

Many types to choose from – Modern fixed braces are not limited to the classic metal “train tracks”. Options can include ceramic braces, which blend with tooth colour, and lingual braces that sit on the inside surfaces of the teeth and are less visible.

Suitable for complex or severe issues – Braces can give orthodontists very precise control over tooth movement and bite correction, which is why they are often recommended for complex cases of teeth crowding, significant bite changes or cases involving extractions. They can be particularly effective for movement involving the back teeth which needs significant changes.

They will stay in place – Braces are fixed so you do not need to remember to remove or replace them, making them a good choice if you think you or your child might find it difficult to stay on top of this.

What are the Potential Drawbacks?

Tooth brushing can be difficult – With traditional braces, there is more of a risk that you could find it difficult to clean your teeth or food could get stuck behind the brackets and wires. It is important to follow the instructions given by your orthodontist to maintain good hygiene and prevent decay.

You will need regular checkups – If you opt for braces, you will often need more regular appointments to check on your progress, which may be expensive and time-consuming.

Braces can be noticeable – This is possibly the main disadvantage, although orthodontic technology has improved significantly; modern ceramic and lingual braces are far less obvious than previous designs.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners, that are custom-made to fit closely over your teeth. Each set of aligners is worn for one or two weeks before moving on to the next in the series, gradually guiding your teeth into a new position. .

As with fixed braces, treatment begins with a detailed digital scan or impression of your teeth, which is used to plan each stage of the movement.

Most Invisalign treatments take around 12 to 18 months, although some simpler cases start seeing results in as little as 6 months, and more  complex cases can take 24 months or longer.

Why Choose Invisalign?

Discreet appearance –  Invisalign aligners are made from clear plastic and fit closely over your teeth, so they are much less noticeable than traditional fixed braces. This makes them a popular choice for adults and teens who want a lower-profile treatment at work, school or in photos.

Removable for eating and cleaning You may find cleaning your teeth is easier with this treatment than with a traditional metal brace, and you can take them out while eating, allowing more comfort and less disruption. You also won’t have to worry so much about food getting stuck in brackets and wires.

You’ll need fewer consultations When you start wearing Invisalign, a lot of the work is already done! Your tooth scan will be used to create customised aligners and retainers. Simply follow the advice of your dentist or orthodontist on how to change and care for them, and you will need fewer visits than with metal braces.

Invisalign is comfortable – While any dental treatment could cause some discomfort, Invisalign aligners are made of plastic rather than metal wires and can be removed. Therefore, they are unlikely to cause pain if they break or rub on the inside of your cheeks, and there are no sharp edges. However, you may experience some pressure or mild discomfort when aligners are changed or replaced.

What Should You Think About Before Treatment?

Invisalign can be very effective, but it is not suitable for every case and it does rely on your commitment.  Before recommending aligners, your dentist will look at 3 main areas: how complex your teeth movements are, how consistently you can wear aligners, and your day-to-day habits.

Invisalign requires consistent wear  – Aligners need to be worn full-time, usually 20-22 hours a day, and only removed for meals and cleaning your teeth.  If they are not worn enough, treatment can be slower or less effective, so fixed braces may be more appropriate for younger children or anyone who might struggle with the routine.

However, if you do misplace your Invisalign aligners, you can always contact us to ensure you have a new set.

Not ideal for complex issues – Invisalign works very well for many mild to moderate alignment issues, especially affecting the front teeth. However, certain complex bite problems, large rotations, or movement of back teeth may still be better treated with fixed braces, sometimes combined with extractions or additional attachments.

With aligners, you still need to avoid sugary or fizzy drinks – It’s important that, when wearing aligners, you minimise how much you drink fizzy or sugary drinks, and remove aligners for all drinks other than water. These can leak behind your aligners and cause staining, decay or gum disease.
