Spark Aligners vs. Invisalign: which is right for you?
We’re unique in offering both Spark® and Invisalign® clear aligners at our practices in East Grinstead and Rochester, and our patients often ask which is better. There’s no definitive answer: both have advantages and disadvantages, and what you ultimately choose will be down to your individual needs and the recommendation of your dentist.
Before you make a decision, it’s worth being informed about both options.
How do clear aligners work?
Both Spark and Invisalign straighten teeth using a system of clear aligner trays. During treatment, you’ll wear each aligner for between 1 and 2 weeks before replacing it with the next in the series. Over a period of around 9 to 12 months, your teeth will gradually be moved into their new positions. To shorten the treatment time and for the best overall results, in straightforward cases we recommend wearing your aligners for between 20 and 22 hours per day.
Both sets of aligners work in a similar way, and can be used to treat a range of orthodontic issues. These include overlapping, sticking out or misaligned teeth, bite issues and crowded teeth. Both options are almost invisible and are nearly undetectable to others.
Facts about Invisalign and Spark
Brought to market in 1998, Invisalign is the most popular system of clear aligners worldwide, and has been used by millions of patients. Align Technology, the company which makes Invisalign aligners, held the patent until 2017, when it expired. Since then, a number of companies have begun making clear aligners.
Ormco, the manufacturer of Spark Aligners, has over 60 years of experience in designing and producing dental technologies. In 2017, Ormco began producing clear aligners, and since then have treated patients all over the world.
Although Spark and Invisalign work in a similar way, there are several differences between them.
Differences between Spark and Invisalign
One of the main differences between Spark and Invisalign clear aligners is the material they are produced with. Invisalign is made with SmartTrack, the original clear aligner material. This is a polymer that follows the shape of your teeth and helps control their movement.
Spark aligners are made with TruGEN™ aligner material, which Ormco claims is more stain-resistant than SmartTrack. If you are prioritising invisibility, Spark aligners may be your preferred choice, although SmartTrack material is also transparent.
With Invisalign, it is recommended that you remove your aligners when drinking any liquid other than water, including tea, coffee, or wine. While Spark’s TruGEN material is more resistant to staining from cold drinks, we still recommend removing your aligners for hot drinks such as tea and coffee, as heat can affect the fit.
Invisalign has a proven track record of over 25 years, and can be used to handle tough or complicated cases, such as overcrowded teeth and bite issues. However, Spark aligners are fast developing an excellent reputation due to their gentle, smooth edges, stain resistance and transparency; they also offer excellent results for rotation and spacing issues.
Which is more comfortable, Spark or Invisalign?
Both Spark and Invisalign are popular alternatives for fixed metal braces which do not require brackets or wires. Both types of clear aligners are created after we create a map of your mouth using a 3D scanner, so they are both unique for your smile.
While many people choose Invisalign because it is comfortable to wear, some patients have reported that Spark aligners are more comfortable as the edges are usually smooth. This is because Spark aligners are usually hand trimmed before you wear them, so they are gentle on your gums and cheeks.
However, during your initial consultation in East Grinstead or Rochester, we’ll take 3D measurements of your mouth, so you can preview exactly how your smile will look in advance. Whichever system you choose, we’ll ensure that your aligners fit snugly and comfortably onto your teeth.
It’s important to remember that you may feel a little discomfort at first, or when you change to a new set of aligners. This is usually nothing to worry about and is a sign that your aligners are working as they should and your teeth are being straightened. However, if you start to feel increased sensitivity in one or more of your teeth, or if you start feeling pain which worsens or does not improve, please contact us.
Which clear aligners move teeth faster?
Both Spark and Invisalign can offer fast results. However, the exact speed depends on the complexity of your treatment, as well as the shape of your mouth, how much you wear your aligners, and whether any attachments are used to secure the aligners in place. Spark aligners can sometimes be ready to change earlier; around every 7-10 days, rather than 1-2 weeks for Invisalign.
Regardless of the system you choose, we recommend you wear your aligners between 20 and 22 hours per day. If you wear them less often than this, your teeth will take longer to move and become straighter.
Are Spark aligners thinner than Invisalign?
Yes, the TruGEN material that Spark aligners are made from is designed to be thinner and more transparent than Invisalign. This often means that it is more flexible, with some patients reporting that it is less bulky to wear than Invisalign aligners. However, Invisalign is designed to deliver continuous force, which means it can be more effective for patients with more complex bite issues. That said, regardless of which brand you choose, both can deliver excellent results under the guidance of a highly experienced orthodontist.
Which is better – Spark or Invisalign?
Clear aligners have become extremely popular in recent years and both Spark and Invisalign are similar treatments, offering similar benefits. Invisalign has a long record of success and is still trusted by millions of patients worldwide, especially for complicated orthodontic problems. However, Spark aligners are recommended by many of our patients as an aligner system that is discreet, stain-resistant and comfortable on your gums.
